Visit to Quaint Town of Jowai Near Shillong

Tina Singh
Visited: May 23, 2006

Although I have been born and brought up in the North-East, it was only recently that I had the fortune of visiting Jowai, a quiet town tucked 60 km away from Shillong. I had always heard of it, but the views that greeted me as I entered the sleepy town gave me a feel of Incredible India. A lovely drive from Shillong, taking you away from its hustle-bustle into the very lap of nature, that comprises of the Indian Wildlife. Curvy roads with a hilly terrain full of exotic vegetation, takes one’s breath away. The weather here is usually cold and dry with rain falling almost all year round. Coal mining is the major business activity here and for people with an adventurous spirit, discovering those mines could be quite a thing to get their adrelanin pumping. Apart from this, the lifestyles of the people, their culture, the classy architecture of stone-houses, and their friendliness would always leave a visitor with nostalgia to come and visit this place which seems to have held time.
