Camel Safari in Rajasthan

The turbaned guide will smile behind his thin black mustache as you will lurch forward toward the ground, then rise several feet into the air as the camel stands up, snorting his oversize nostrils and batting his long eyelashes. The imposing Jaisalmer fortress will recede into the distance behind as you will shuffle into the shimmering horizon of desert, carried along by loping spongy feet.

The camel is not only common in the Thar desert, but is also the only means of transportation in remote areas. People use it to ride through sandy tracks, passing through remote villages. The safari is organized to take tourists through the golden sands of the vast Thar desert and untamed countryside, so that one can create his/her memoirs in the peaceful desert life. Tourists can stay close to life in very remote villages by pitching tents every night at different venues, spend evenings next to the camp fire and dance to the folk music.

On your way, you will pass by working farmers, herds of goats and camels, and small settlements of stacked stone or baked mud huts. You will witness a quiet and solitary life, away from even the basic diversions of an Indian village. The camels generally know the way, so you will have plenty of time to think and soak up the warmth and get lost in the scenery. The only sound you will hear is the tinkling bells around the necks of the camels.

Nights halts are usually given near the village to provide opportunities to mingle with the local village folks and to provide insight to the traditional way of their life and culture. A camel cart accompanies on the tour to handle baggage and allow riders to take rest as and when required. You get the chance to lie down to sleep in the open night air, seeing more stars than anyone ever does in the presence of electricity. Wake up at dawn and watch the sun arise on the opposite horizon as you roll up the sleeping bags.
