This temple is devoted to goddess Kanyakumari, who is also known as kumara Amman among the indigenous populace. There is a legend that states Parashakti the goddess who had descended down on the earth to rid the gods and humans of the ails caused by Banasura, the demon, was amative towards lord shiva. Lord shiva also had fallen in the attraction for the goddess and both had been thinking in terms of tying knots. However, observing their inclinations towards each other, Narat, the devine sage turned out to be pensive and as per the blessings granted to Banasura he could have been killed by only the unwedded girl. Hence, he devised a plan to foil their bid to betroth. He invited them to meet them at the secluded place in the mid of the night as he foretold it to be the only auspicious time for their marriage. Overjoyed lord shiva hardly had reached Vazukkamparai, covering a distance of 5 KM from Suchindram, when taking guise of a cock, sage narad began crowing, there by making the false impression of day break and thus the marriage was foiled. Later on when enamored by the beauty of goddess, banasura put forth the marriage proposal before the goddess, she pronto brought out her shining long sword and clave him into twain. It is believed that since then the goddess has been in wait for the arrival of Lord shiva to wed her.
