This region was initially under reign of ambitious king Prithvi Narayan Shah of Nepal. As far as its nomenclature is concerned, there are various theories coined and one of them widely accepted is that the source of this name is the famous temple of the Hindu shrine, Shyamali Devi, who is believed to be the incarnation of the most dreaded Hindu goddess, Kali.
